Double walled tanks are used when containment dikes are not feasible or desirable. The area between the two tanks is called the “interstitial space.” If a leak in the fuel tank occurs, the fuel will flow to a drain port at the bottom of the outer tank. A leak detector can be mounted here to alert a tank leak condition.
